Karen Brownd

Karen Brownd is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Mental Health Service Provider Supervisor in Memphis, with more than 22 years of experience helping individuals, couples, and families heal from addiction, trauma, and the relationship damage that often comes with them. She is also a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist Supervisor (CSAT-S) through the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP), which means she not only treats clients but trains and supervises other therapists pursuing the CSAT credential.

Working Together

Karen and Allan share an office suite and refer clients to each other, so clients benefit from two experienced CSATs under one roof. When a partner and a spouse each need their own therapist, or a client needs a specialty the other provides, the handoff is simple and the care stays connected.

What Karen Helps With

Karen's top specialties are sex and pornography addiction, trauma and PTSD, and dual diagnosis (co-occurring addiction and mental health conditions). She also works with:

  • Love addiction and betrayal trauma
  • Substance use and alcohol recovery
  • Infidelity and relationship repair
  • Healthy communication for couples and families
  • Physical, emotional, mental, and sexual abuse
  • Anxiety, depression, and mood disorders
  • Anger management and impulse control
  • Grief and life transitions
  • Men's and women's issues

Karen's Approach

Karen believes that the experiences we go through shape the core beliefs we carry about ourselves. Healthy beliefs build confidence. Painful ones can quietly hold us back, keeping us stuck in shame, anger, or fear. Many of her clients come to her wanting to understand what happened to them and why they keep getting in their own way.

Her work focuses on answering that "what and why." Together with each client, she sets clear goals and builds a collaborative plan to understand the patterns behind their behavior and make the changes they want to see. She draws on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), trauma-focused therapy, interpersonal therapy, and family and marital therapy, tailoring the approach to each person or couple. At the heart of her work is a simple belief: everyone deserves a happy life, and everyone is capable of change.
