The anxiety, the low days, the grief, the erratic patterns you can't shake. They may be pointing at something deeper

Trauma Therapy for Individuals & Couples in Memphis, TN

When the Symptoms Aren't the Whole Story

Maybe it shows up as anxiety that won't switch off, or a heaviness that's dimmed everything for longer than you'd admit. Maybe it's grief you can't move through, relationships that keep hitting the same painful wall, or emotions that swing harder than you want them to. You've maybe been told these are separate problems to manage one at a time.

Often, they're connected. Anxiety, depression, grief, and the patterns that strain our closest relationships frequently trace back to unresolved childhood trauma and pain that was never fully healed. Treat the symptom alone and it tends to return. Heal what's underneath, and everything above it can start to shift.

A Trauma-Informed Guide for What's Underneath

I'm Allan J. Katz, a licensed counselor and Certified Sex Addiction Therapist with advanced training in trauma counseling, Brainspotting, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and experiential work. For over a decade  I've helped individuals and couples get to the root of what's driving their pain, not just quiet the symptoms. I work with the whole picture, so the relief actually lasts.

What I Help With

Anxiety.

When worry, panic, or a constant sense of being on edge runs your days, we calm the nervous system and address what's fueling it underneath.

Depression.

For the low, flat, or hopeless stretches that don't lift on their own, we work toward real, felt change, not just coping.

Grief & loss.

When loss has left you stuck, we make room for the grief and help you carry it in a way that lets you keep living.

Relationship & personality patterns.

For the recurring dynamics that keep hurting your connections, we trace them to their origin and build healthier ways of relating, individually or as a couple.

How Trauma Ties It Together

Trauma isn't only the obvious, catastrophic events. It's also the accumulated wounds, the losses, the negative ongoing childhood experiences, the moments that taught your nervous system the world isn't safe. Those wounds don't stay put. They surface later as anxiety, depression, complicated grief, emotional dysregulation, and the painful patterns that show up in our relationships. This is why treating each symptom in isolation so often falls short: they share a root. Trauma-informed therapy works at that root, which is what allows change that holds instead of change that fades.

The Approaches I Use

I match trauma-informed methods to what you actually need:

Brainspotting and Harmonic Brain Healing.

Reaches and releases trauma stored beneath conscious awareness, where talk therapy alone can't reach.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

Practical skills for regulating emotion, tolerating distress, and steadying yourself in difficult moments.

Emotion-Focused, Developmental & Experiential Therapy.

Active, feeling-level work, especially powerful for couples, that changes patterns instead of just analyzing them.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm not sure what I went through counts as 'trauma.' Does this still apply?

Yes. Trauma isn't only major, obvious events. Ongoing stress, loss, and painful childhood experiences count too, and they can drive anxiety, depression, and relationship struggles just as powerfully. You don't need to label it to benefit from healing it.

Do you treat anxiety and depression on their own, or only trauma?

Both. Many people come in for anxiety, depression, or grief specifically. The trauma-informed lens simply means we also look at what may be feeding those symptoms, so relief lasts.

Can couples do this work together?

Yes. When old wounds and patterns are straining a relationship, I work with couples to heal them together using ERCEM, Developmental and experiential approaches.

Do you take insurance and offer online sessions?

Yes to both. Insurance accepted, in-person in Memphis, and secure telehealth across Tennessee and New Jersey.
